MONTE SAN GIULIANO AND THE MONUMENT TO THE REDENTOR
Just 2 km north from Caltanissetta, it rises San Giuliano Mountain, a hill 727 meters high, on top of which it stands Ernesto Basile Square, which offers a beautiful panoramic view over the city of Caltanissetta. Since 1900 the square has hosted the monument to the Redeemer, a chapel topped by a bronze statue of the Redeemer 4.75 meters high, with a total height of 18 meters. The construction of the monument had been within the context of the Jubilee of 1900, when a committee decided to build 19 Roman monuments to Jesus Christ the Redeemer to celebrate the nineteen centuries since the Redemption and one twentieth monument to devote to Christ also the nascent twentieth century. Over the years, the area of the monument has lost its sacred function and on summer evenings turns into a meeting point for citizens "nisseni" from which to enjoy a splendid panorama.
