COZZO DISI MINE
Casteltermini’s history is double tied to that of the Cozzo Disi mine, one of the biggest sulphur mines in Italy, the driving force of the city’s economy, thanks to which, together with the contribution of many other mines scattered over its territory, Casteltermini, for about two centuries, delivered the highest sulphur production in Italy. The mining activity began in the early 1800, when the Count Della Bastiglia, lord of that feud, ordered to dig a tunnel after he had noticed a sulphur layer at the foot of the Monterlongo mountain, and definitely stopped in 1988, in conformity with Regional Law n° 34, which ratified the closing of the Sicilian sulphur mines. Some areas of the mine are being restored to be exploited as a tourist attraction, since it will become the only sulphur mine that can be visited down to the 12th level underground.
