TRABIA TALLARITA – THE MUSEUM
It is the largest sulphur mine of the Caltanissetta territory, and today, it represents also one of the most fascinating examples of industrial archaeology of the island. The mine dates back to 1730, when the Solfara Grande was opened, followed by the Tallarita in 1823. The moment of maximum splendour of the mining activity dates back to the ‘20s of the 20th Century, when, from the bowels of the Caltanissetta plateau, 12% of the world sulphur was extracted. The presence of 3,000 miners constantly working underground led to the establishment of a small village next to the facilities. Unfortunately, in the ’50s, the competition of the US brought the local system to its knees, helped by the death of many miners caused by the collapse of the Scordia pit that followed a firedamp explosion. The mine was closed in 1975. The first stage of the restoration works started in 2010 and involved the “Palladio” power station and the adjoining facilities, once destined to shops and offices, with the goal to open the first portion of the museum destined to illustrate the natural and human events related to this wonderful place.
