SABUCINA
Every journey has its mandatory stops: if you travel in Sicily and you visit Caltanissetta, you must see the wonders of Sabucina. 10 km northeast of Caltanissetta, on the 706 metre mountain that bears the same name, the Siculan-Greek town of Sabucina overlooks the Salso River valley. The area displays all its fascination thanks to the remains of various buildings that stick out in several spots on the hill slopes, which hosted first an indigenous village of the ancient Bronze Age (end of 3rd millennium – early 2nd millennium B. C.), of which we can see the various organisational stages, and later a citadel inhabited until the Hellenistic age (3rd Century B. C.). The indigenous village, with its huts surrounded by stone walls assembled with the “herringbone” technique, is an excellent example of a late Bronze Age settlement. In 310 B. C., the village was abandoned and its inhabitants moved to the farms at the foot of the hill. In the Roman period, especially in the Imperial age, villas were built in the plain that extends at the foot of Sabucina, as pointed by the hamlet of Piano della Clesia and the necropolis in Contrada Lannari, where a marble bust-portrait of the Imperator Geta (206 – 201 A.D.) has been found.
