GIBIL-GABEL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
5 km southeast from Caltanissetta, overlooking from the west the valley of the Salso River, Gibil-Gabel, the name given by the Arabs to identify the “city of the dead”, offers you the chance to plunge into the remains of important and large cult complexes and of dwellings of the archaic and classic period. The site, situated on a 615 metres hill, had been already explored with excavations in the mid-1800, followed by the work of the archaeologist Dinu Adamesteanu during the ‘50s of the 20th Century. The area unfolds on three platforms sloping to southeast: it is an indigenous village Hellenised in later years, perhaps the ancient Nizza, which later became Caltanissetta. A hut of the Bronze Age is still visible on the mountain plateau, while defensive structures dating back to the 6th Century B. C. face the Salso River. At the foot of the hill, two necropolises have returned some ceramics of the Siceliot epoch.
