VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES
The Valley of the Temples has been declared in 1997 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park contains an extraordinary monumental and landscaping heritage that includes all the remains of the ancient city of Akragas. With its 1,300 hectares, it’s the largest archaeological site in the world and is characterised by the presence of important temples of the Hellenistic period. In the oriental sector, on a hill, we find the temples of Juno, of Concord and of Heracles. The magnificent vestige of the temple of Juno stands out on the edge of a rocky hill, in a spot that offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. This temple, dedicated to weddings, was built in the 5th Century B.C.. It has an almost intact row of columns, surmounted by its architrave. The temple of Concord is a magnificent Doric temple of the 5th Century B.C. and one of the three best preserved Hellenic temples. The elegance of its proportions makes it a perfect example of the Classic style. The temple of Heracles (dedicated to the son of Zeus and Alcmene) is considered the most ancient temple of Agrigento in an archaic Doric style, with a row of 8 columns, surmounted by capitals. In the western sector, there is the temple of Zeus, which was one of the three biggest temples of the Hellenic world and the biggest in Sicily. There are two ideal moments to visit the temples: early in the morning, when the site opens, before the arrival of hordes of tourists unloaded by the buses, or at night, when the temples are lit by the sunset light.
