THE ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY / PLANETARIUM
Since 2004, the Montedoro Astronomical Observatory is located west of town, in the point called "Pupiddru", on Monte Ottavio. The structure, coated with Travertino marble slabs, has a turret surmounted by an observatory that can open and rotate, which hosts also a room destined to accommodate meetings or events of scientific and cultural nature. The facility looks like a thin and elongated prism that, unassuming, sticks out of the ground: the two poles that led the project are the Sky and the Earth. In fact, the observatory is built on a site that has a special charm. The "Pupiddru", which the Arabs called "El Minzar" (lookout), with its 518 metres of height allows observing the Sicilian inland landscape at 360° degrees, focusing on the towns of Sutera and Mussomeli, with a look on the Madonie Mountains and even on the Etna. Inside the structure that accommodates the dome, there is the Planetarium: a last-generation digital planetarium allows learning about the sky and experiencing astronomical distances and phenomena, also thanks to the possibility to play full dome movies.
