Museo della zolfara- Ivano Mistretta-3

The Museum of the Zolfara, dedicated to Angelo Petyx, a writer and poet from Montedoro, was established in order to valorise and protect the historical–mineralogical heritage of the town, and holds the permanent exhibition "Zolfare e zolfatari di Montedoro, civica raccolta di testimonianze etnostoriche"  that offers information, pictures, reconstructions, minerals and tools related to the mining activity. Located at the entrance of the Montedoro Public Park, on Monte Ottavio, the Museum is close to the Solfara Nadurello, the most long-lived of the area, property of one of the most influential families of Montedoro during the sulphur golden age, the Caico family. The building that accommodates the Museum is simple, but very nice from an architectural point of view: the structure offers two itineraries for the visit, one indoor and one outdoor. The indoor itinerary sketches the history of sulphur in Sicily, while the outdoor one allows observing what is left of the mining activity, with the furnaces, the walkable winze and some old trolleys. So, notwithstanding its small size, the museum offers a very interesting historical-educational itinerary, especially for student classes.
