THE CIAVOLOTTA MINE
The Ciavolotta mine is an old sulphur mine located on a hill between Favara and Villaggio Mosè, which is a suburb of Agrigento. Its first proprietor was Cafisi Paolo and his heirs. The mine has been one of the major sulphur mines of the Agrigento mining district. The solfatara was already active in 1839; later, it was abandoned, but, since 2010, it is involved in a project of conversion into a mining park and a tourist attraction. The mining activity left is testified, both underground and on the surface, by the presence of various areas with mounds of slag extracted from the mine and then melted. Other remains are the melting stacks, some parts of Gill ovens, lifting and lowering systems and systems for sulphur processing, a calcarone, and the ancient entrances, especially along the gypsum walls.
