THE ZOLFARA APAFORTE/STINCONE
The Apaforte and Stincone mine still shows its past sulphur extraction activity. It is probably one of the most ancient Sicilian mines, working since the 18th Century. Today, what is still visible and open to the public is represented by a winze made of limestone blocks; the infamous “scaluni ruttu”, the cause of the suffering inflicted to the “carusi”, forced to go up and down tens of times a day with backbreaking loads; a Gill oven to melt the sulphur; calcarelle and calcheroni used for the first melting; and the grottoes where the miners used to get changed.
