collina dei vulcanelli- Legambiente, Aragona (AG)

The Macalube Reserve is a regional natural reserve of Sicily managed by Legambiente. The most interesting area is the hill of the Vulcanelli, a clayey area that features many small mud volcanoes that create rare eruption phenomena. It is an odd volcanic phenomenon due to the presence of methane in the hill: sulphur fields at ground level that gurgle and spit mud in a lunar landscape. After erupting, the mud hardens and takes a strange texture and odd shapes. As for the flora, the reserve hosts various endemic species such as the Aster sorrentinii, the Allium agrigentinum, the Salsola Agrigentina, the Lygeum Spartum and the Malva Agrigentina. In spring, we can observe, next to most common species, the blooming of wonderful orchids. As for the fauna, in the rainy season, the formation of several pools favours the reproduction of amphibians (Rana esculenta) and the presence of a great number of reptiles. It is worth a visit to see the small volcanoes that, however, are not always active.

It is located 4 km SO from Aragona and 15 north of Agrigento
Offices: Via Salvatore La Rosa, 53 Aragona
The visits are temporarily suspended due to seizure of the area
