THE MINING MUSEUM
The Sommatino Museo Comunale di Storia Naturale ed Arte Mineraria opened in 2001. Divided into two sections, the Geological – paleontological section and the mining section, is awaiting the opening of further rooms. The first section illustrates the geological evolution of the territory through collections of rocks, minerals, fossils and panels that offer reconstructions of the prehistoric life. It is a timeline that reconstructs geological macro-eras, the leitmotiv of this section. The second section illustrates the stages of sulphur mining, displaying drilling tools, lamps, masks and toxic gas and firedamp detectors. The model of the entire Trabia Tallarita mining complex and the reconstruction in the scale of the mining headframe of the Vittorio Vitello pit, with the big silo, are very well done.
