THE CHIESA MADRE OF SAN DOMENICO

The current church of San Domenico, located in Via Belvedere, rebuilt in 1870 on the foundations of the ancient church of Sant’Antonino, is the only church in Realmonte. Designed by the engineer Grimaldi, the building has one nave with half-columns in a typical neoclassic style and preciously decorated capitals. The first church of Realmonte was built in the place that, today, is occupied by Piazza Umberto I° and was dedicated to San Domenico, in honour of the town founder, Don Domenico Monreale. On 22 April 1683, it became the new Chiesa Matrice of Realmonte.
