Biblioteca Lucchesiana
One of the hidden wonders of the city’s old town is certainly the Biblioteca Lucchesiana. It was founded as the personal library of an Agrigento’s bishop of the 18th Century, Andrea Lucchesi Palli. Today, the library has over 45,000 books of theology, philosophy, history, and humanistic subjects, kept in precious hand-carved wooden shelves. In his testament, Andrea Lucchesi Palli left the library to the city of Agrigento, which did not see the importance of such a gift, leaving the books and the whole structure to deteriorate with time. The situation became even worse with the tragic landslide of 1966 that hit the heart of the old town. Fortunately, today, the entire building has been restored and the books have been re-evaluated and valorised.
