A Madonna di Li Salinari
On the third Sunday of August, the town celebrates the SS. Annunziata, "A Madonna di li salinari”, with a feast. The devotion for Maria SS. Annunziata originates in Acquaviva Platani in the last years of 1800, when a niche was built on the crest of the hill south of town by Mr. Salvatore Mendola, who had a farm nearby, and dedicated to the Vergine Annunziata in honour of his first wife, Nunzia Siracusa.
Initially, the feast was held on 25 March. The first summer feasts date back to 1930 and continued until the ‘50s, but the closing of the local mine caused its decline. In 1983, thanks to the interest of some former salt miners, the feast was resumed, and since 2004 it has been entrusted to a committee formed by a group of worshippers.
