Route 1 – Mines: from the sulfur to the salt
Another archaeological itinerary, but concerning the industrial archaeology of the mines, to understand their most significant aspects in one go. We start in Caltanissetta, visiting the Mineralogical and Paleontological Museum of the Zolfara. After the visit, we leave for San Cataldo, which we pass to reach Gabbara, the protected area that inside contains various remains of the sulphur production. We reach it from Calvario di San Cataldo, through Contrada Giganna and Provincial Highway 149 to the gate of the protected area. From there, after the excursion, we return to San Cataldo and proceed for Apaforte, following State Highway 122 to Serradifalco (the site is just north of the village). To complete the itinerary, we travel about 50 km towards Realmonte (RG). Be it in one day or, as recommended, in two legs, in any case, the itinerary will provide us with an understanding also of the different morphologies, of the different landscapes and of the different contexts of the two types of sulphur mining, as well as with a journey inside the Mining District.
