THE FEAST OF THE SS. MADONNA DELLA CATENA
On the second Sunday of September, Riesi celebrates its Patron, the SS Madonna della Catena. On the Saturday night before the feast, the pilgrims from the nearby villages get ready to meet the Patron by walking barefoot the road to Riesi’s Mother Church. The procession starts either late in the afternoon or late at night: the statue of the Madonna della Catena is carried out of the church, and immediately after, a loud noise announces the beginning of the feast. After parading in procession along the town streets, the statue returns to the Basilica, which is decorated, on such occasion, with majestic lights. The Patron’s feast offers also the chance to try some sweets like the guasteddri, deep fried bread dough coated with sugar; the mastazzoli, made with carobs; and the torrone, the typical sweet of the Madonna della Catena feast.
